Art Note: Creating Texture

I work on several paintings at a time. This painting of a Green Buddha was inspired by one I saw on a paper napkin. To add interest to the image I’m adding some white texture around the image using a small sponge.

First I squeezed a pea-sized amount of white acrylic paint on my palette and then lightly dipped the sponge in the paint and dabbed it on the canvas. I carefully spaced the dabs so they don’t bunch up in one area.

While painting this I was curious what the Green Buddha represents and found this from Tricycle.com: “The Green Buddha is traditionally the Laughing Buddha, bringer of prosperity and mirth.”

May this be a blessed year for you!

“Create” is a painting that’s on a 30″ x 40″ canvas I began today. This first layer is yellow, orange and white acrylic. The soft effect is thanks to a sponge.

Appreciating the Light

It’s that time of year when sunrise is after 7 a.m. and by the third week in December the dark early mornings come to a peak as we move to longer days again.

Though I’m not Jewish, I had the honor of celebrating Hanukkah back in October with a friend who is and she wanted to share the experience. Participating in her annual ritual of lighting these seven candles, we waited and watched until there was darkness.

As I’m checking Christmas lists I don’t want to forget that this was originally an ancient celebration of the turning of the seasons and the Spirit of Kindness. At least that’s how I like to look at it, yet easily forget.

This is a season about Light. Celebrating the Inner, Outer and Omniscient Light.

I wish you much joy and peace this season.

Meditation Painting

Ever since I took Fashion Illustration class at City College in San Francisco this past summer I’ve been painting and drawing almost every day.

Don’t you like the compactness of classes in the summer? Six weeks of three times a week equals the 17 weeks in fall or winter semester. It’s so efficient.

There were two course instructors. Lorraine Wilner and Paul Gallo. Wilner taught the first three weeks and Gallo taught the last three.

It was from inspiration from Gallo that I decided to keep up the painting and drawing. Thank you Paul Gallo!

My daily paintings have become a meditation practice. I don’t have preconceived ideas of what’s going to appear on the canvas. I’m just going with the flow.

Above is recent painting I titled “Peace.” Holding thoughts of Peace now, more than ever.
